>> The Star-Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis reported Tuesday that its film reviewer Colin Covert had plagiarized lines from other reviewers in his movie reviews several times over his decades-long career. Covert’s reviews were syndicated nationally, and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has run many of them over the years. Most recently, his review of the movie “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” ran in the Star-Advertiser’s TGIF section on Nov. 9, and has been identified by the Star-Tribune as one that included plagiarized material. Specifically, Covert used nearly an exact sentence written by Jon Frosch of the Hollywood Reporter in his review of the 2017 movie “Call Me by Your Name.” The sentence read, “There’s breathtaking craft and control in her performance, but not once do you sense the tools at work.” The Star-Tribune said Covert has resigned and apologized for his ethical infractions. The Star-Tribune editor’s note on the plagiarism is at 808ne.ws/plagiarism.
