The Chaminade men’s basketball team beat Dallas Baptist 87-81 in the Hoops in Hawaii D2 Power Invitational at the Hawaii Convention Center on Monday.
Junior guard Tyler Cartaino led the Silverswords (9-0) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Grant Dressler and senior forward Erik Scheive each added 17 points.
Freshman guard Carter Brown led the Patriots (8-4) with 21 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Jordan Manse added 16 points.
Earlier Monday, Scheive was named the PacWest conference player of the week. He averaged 19.7 points and 10 rebounds last week and had a career-high 26 points in Saturday’s win over Holy Names.
Dressler earned PacWest defender of the week by totaling 22 rebounds, two blocks and a steal last week. It’s Dressler’s second weekly honor this season, earning PacWest player of the week earlier this month.
UH Hilo women’s hoops beats Holy Names
The University of Hawaii Hilo’s women’s basketball team took down Holy Names 72-56 Monday at the Hilo Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Sophomore forward Allie Navarette led the Vulcans (3-3, 1-3 PacWest) with 21 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Freshman guard Mandi Kawaha and senior guard Alyssa Movchan both added 13 points.
Junior guard Taylor Krouse led the Hawks (1-10, 1-5) with 14 points and three rebounds. Center Onjalise Carley-Hilliard added 12 points.
The Vulcans play today against Alaska-Anchorage.
Kado Baseball camps coming up
A series of clinics covering on- and off-field topics for baseball players, parents and coaches is set for this weekend at Farrington High School and Mid-Pacific Institute.
Kado Baseball will host its Hawaii Grown Instructional Baseball Camp for high school players starting Friday at Farrington and continuing Saturday and Sunday at MPI. Instructors will include former MPI standout Donny Kadokawa and Waiakea graduate Kainoa Correa, an infield instructor in the Cleveland Indians organization. The cost of the camp is $159 for position players and $129 for pitching only.
Correa, a former college coach, and Ryan Thompson, a college baseball adviser with SportsForce, will hold a college recruiting seminar at 9 a.m. Saturday at MPI. Players and parents are invited to the free session. A free clinic for parents and coaches at all levels covering coaching techniques will also be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Kado Baseball also has a camp for players ages 8-11 set for Dec. 27-28 and another for players ages 12-14 (up to grade 8) on Dec. 29-30.
