The Chaminade men’s basketball team moved up to No. 12 in the latest NABC Coaches Top 25 Poll released Friday.
The undefeated Silverswords (10-0) moved up eight spots from No. 20, reaching their highest ranking in their Division II history. The ’Swords won the Hawaii D2 Power Invitational earlier this week, capping the tournament with an upset of then-No. 7 UC San Diego 70-64.
The top four remained the same with Bellarmine (Ky.) at No. 1, Northwest Missouri State at No. 2, Indiana (Pa.) at No. 3 and Saint Anselm (N.H.) at No. 4.
Chaminade opens PacWest play at Fresno Pacific (4-6) on Dec. 31.
Ogoshi inducted into Hofstra Hall of Fame
Roosevelt High graduate Shellane Ogoshi, one of the most decorated players in Hofstra women’s volleyball, is part of the five-member class of 2019 that will be inducted into the Pride Athletics Hall of Fame in June.
Ogoshi was the Colonial Athletic Association’s rookie of the year in 2004, the CAA player and setter of the year in 2005, and setter of the year in 2006. She was a three-time All-CAA first-team selection and named to the CAA’s Silver Anniversary Volleyball team.
Ogoshi holds the program record for assists (4,597) and is second in digs (1,660). She also was a two-time academic all-district selection and her No. 4 jersey was retired in 2008.
Team Hawaii earns silver in volleyball
Team Hawaii, an 18-under girls all-star volleyball team representing the Aloha Region, won the silver medal at the Rebisco Volleyball League National Championship Finals at Pasig City in Manila.
Team Hawaii placed second among an international field of 12 that included nine regional champions from the Philippines, and one each from Malaysia and New Zealand.
Keau Kamakeeaina (Kahuku) was twice named Player of the Match, and Madisyn Beirne (Punahou), Ella Connor (Seabury Hall) and Naniloa Spaar (Kamehameha-Hawaii) each earned one match honor. Making the all-tournament team were Spaar, who was named the Most Valuable Player and best outside hitter; Beirne (No. 2 outside hitter); and Le Jardin’s Nive Tuileta ( best setter).
Also on the team were Siela Avea (Kahuku), Gennezia Hawkins (Le Jardin), Aniya Hawthorne (Leilehua) and Chevelle Wagner-Chun (Waianae). The head coach was Larry Tuileta, who coaches at Le Jardin and Ka Ulukoa.
