A flash flood warning is in effect for Kauai until 12:45 p.m. today.

Updated 5:30 p.m.

Kuhio Highway near Hanalei Bridge has been reopened to one lane of alternating traffic, a Kauai county spokeswoman said.

At about 4:30 p.m., the shelter at Hanalei Elementary School was still open and numerous people had stopped by to rest, but no one stayed for a long time, said Kauai spokeswoman Sarah Blane.

Kuhio Highway between Waikoko and Wainiha has been reopened and convoys have resumed on a holiday schedule after being closed for flooding earlier today, a Kauai spokeswoman said.

Flooding closed the road for about two hours this morning. The area is open to local residents only, and access beyond Wainiha checkpoint requires a county placard.

State crews have also cleared a landslide that was blocking Kuhio Highway near Hanalei.

The Hanalei Bridge remains closed because of flooding until further notice.

12:50 p.m.:

An emergency shelter has been opened at Hanalei Elementary School after heavy rainfall closed Hanalei Bridge, Kauai county said.

The American Red Cross opened the shelter at about 11 a.m.

The flash flood warning that was in effect for Kauai expired at 12:45 p.m.

At 12:04 p.m., radar showed showers had weakened and moved offshore, but water levels remained high from the earlier rainfall, the National Weather Service said

At about 10:30 a.m., radar indicated “intense” rainfall over interior Kauai and to the south of Na Pali State Park and Hanalei, the weather service said. The downpours were moving to the west at 5 mph.

In a 3-hour period that ended at 11:45 a.m., Hanalei received more than 4 inches of rain and Mount Waialeale was drenched with more than 3 inches of rain, according to the weather service.

Kuhio Highway near Hanalei Bridge has also been closed because of the flooding. The closure includes a portion of the highway south of the bridge that was already blocked by a landslide this morning.

Police were at the scene and state Department of Transportation crews were responding, Kauai county said.

Convoys on Kuhio Highway between Waikoko and Wainiha have been suspended until further notice because of the bad weather, the county said.

Previous coverage:

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood warning for Kauai until 12:45 p.m. today.

The warning replaces the flood advisory issued earlier this morning. The radar detected heavy rain showers near Hanalei and over the interior mountains of Kauai as of 9:50 a.m. Rain gauges indicated rainfall rates exceeding 3 inches per hour at times over the interior areas of Kauai.

The locations in the advisory include but are not limited to the following areas:

>> Kalihiwai

>> Kilauea

>> Na Pali State Park

>> Princeville

>> Wainiha

>> Hanalei

>> Haena

In addition, a landslide has closed a portion of the southbound lane of Kuhio Highway south of Hanalei Bridge until further notice. Kauai police and state Department of Transportation officials are on the scene. Kuhio Highway at Hanalei Bridge is open at the moment, but the rain gauge showed an increase in water levels at the Hanalei River with the potential for flooding near the bridge. The Kauai Emergency Management Agency urges residents to avoid the area.

The advisory warns Kauai residents to stay away from streams, roads and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. The advisory may be extended if heavy rain continues.
