Hawaiian monk seals had a record number of babies born in 2018

    Hawaiian monk seal mom Rocky gave birth to her pup, RK58, over the summer of 2018 on Kauai. After a mom-pup switch, Rocky did not take the pup back and appeared to have left the area. Wildlife officials, concerned about the pup, transported him to Ke Kai Ola, the monk seal hospital in Kailua-Kona, where he continues to gain weight. RK58 sleeps on the beach before he was taken to Ke Kai Ola.

Hawaiian monk seals, a critically endangered species found only in Hawaii, are protected by both federal and state laws. Only an estimated 1,400 monk seals remain in the wild, according to NOAA. Read more
