A recent Star-Advertiser editorial said that “the City Council, in tandem with Honolulu’s police and fire departments, should examine possibilities for stepping up effective law enforcement” (“Fireworks outlaws must be deterred,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, Dec. 31).
All that needs to be done is enforce existing laws regarding illegal sales of these large aerial bombs. With hundreds being ignited every day from Halloween through New Year’s Eve, it wouldn’t be difficult to apprehend those scofflaws selling these bombs.
The editorial noted that the possession of illegal fireworks can be a “Class C felony, if the total fireworks weight is 25 pounds or more.” No doubt an undercover investigation would confiscate hundreds of pounds, resulting in dozens of arrests.
When the sellers are brought to justice, only then will their uncaring buyers cease their reckless harm to those with PTSD or animals, and endangering life and property with their bombs.
If these laws are not enforced, it should be interpreted that “where corruption exists, the rule of law cannot flourish.”
