A 38-year-old man is in critical condition after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Kahuku Sunday night.

The crash occurred on Kamehameha Highway, approximately a half-mile south of Marconi Road.

Police said the man was traveling northbound on the highway at a “high rate of speed” at approximately 9:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle. He crossed into the southbound lane and up a grassy embankment when the vehicle rolled back into the roadway and onto the northbound lane.

The vehicle then went onto a grass shoulder and struck a tree. Police said the man was thrown from the vehicle upon impact.

Emergency Medical Services took him in critical condition to an area hospital.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash. It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police are continuing their investigation.
