A large brush fire broke out near 4050 Kala Waa Street in Wailea on Sunday, prompting guests and staff to evacuate Hotel Wailea. The fire was 100 percent contained today, as crews continue to put out hot spots.
A large brush fire that scorched approximately 200 acres of brush on Maui is 100 percent contained, according to Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino’s office.
Firefighters continue to put out hot spots and monitor the area where a fire broke out near 4050 Kala Waa Street in Wailea at approximately 6:40 p.m. Sunday. The fast-moving fire prompted an evacuation of guests and staff at the Hotel Wailea.
An evacuation center opened at Kihei Community Center Sunday night where more than 30 people, mostly visitors, sought shelter. Other hotels also gave temporary accommodations to evacuees. The evacuation center closed Monday when the fire was reported to be 60 percent contained.
“I’m grateful for all the hard work and dedication of Maui firefighters, police and first responders,” Victorino said in a released statement today. “And, I thank all of the Red Cross volunteers who responded and staffed a shelter for more than 30 people Sunday night.”
There have been no reports of injuries or property damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
