Hawaii residents are right to expect the Department of Land and Natural Resources to take effective corrective action in response to the findings of the state Auditor on the administration of the Legacy Land Conservation Fund (“Audit: DLNR funds mishandled,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 8).
However, these findings should not blind us to the success of the fund in helping to preserve key landscape properties such as the Hawea Heiau Complex and Keawawa Wetland in East Oahu, the seashore lands at Kawa on Hawaii island, the Honoma‘ele lands on Maui, Kainalu Ranch on Molokai, and Black Pot on Kauai’s Hanalei Bay.
Let’s strive to empower more communities to achieve success stories like the recent preservation of southeast Oahu’s Ka Iwi coastline.
We hope our state leaders also recognize the positive results of the fund. Strengthening the Legacy Land Conservation Fund will continue to build our legacy for future generations.
