High surf advisory in effect for north, west shores of smaller isles

A high surf advisory has been issued for the north- and west-facing shores of Hawaii’s smaller isles due to several northwest swells, in effect through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Weather officials said surf is expected to reach 15 to 20 feet today and tonight, and rise to 18 to 25 feet on Tuesday for the north- and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai, and north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui.

Surf is expected to reach 10 to 14 feet today and tonight, and rise to 12 to 16 feet Tuesday along west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai.

Strong, breaking waves, shore break, and longshore and rip currents are expected, making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should exercise caution and heed all advice given by Ocean Safety officials. Boaters should be aware of recreational surfers and body boarders utilizing harbor channels to access surfing areas.

Temperatures dipped to 58 degrees Fahrenheit at Kahului Airport on Sunday night, 62 degrees Fahrenheit at Kalaeloa Airport and 66 degrees at Honolulu Airport. The record low for Honolulu is 56 degrees, set in 1963.

Forecasters said the weather should remain mostly dry and stable, with light variable winds, through early Wednesday morning. Winds are expected to shift towards a more southerly direction on Wednesday afternoon as a cold front approaches the isles from the northwest — sweeping from west to east on Thursday and Friday, bringing widespread showers across the state.
