I am appalled at the level of ignorance by Trump supporters who write to you advocating the construction of a wall along the Mexican border. The facts are crystal clear, but they do not care.
First, most illegal drugs come through legitimate border crossings concealed in vehicles or through tunnels or by air, not carried by people illegally crossing where the wall would be built.
Second, asylum seekers likewise overwhelmingly enter this country via legitimate border crossings.
Third, in the last 20 years, illegal entry into the U.S. has dropped sharply.
Fourth, legal and illegal immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than Americans.
Why then should we waste $5 billion-plus on a useless wall? Think of how much good that money would do if used for education or the environment.
All of us need to speak out against this patent waste of money by President Donald Trump.
