A 30-year-old Keaau man has died from injuries he sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Captain Cook.

Positive identification is pending.

The crash occurred on Highway 11 near the 99-mile marker at approximately 11:55 p.m. Tuesday.

A white 1993 Nissan pickup truck operated by the Keaau man was traveling north on the highway when he “crossed double solid yellow lines near a turn and drove off an embankment on the makai side of the roadway,” according to a Hawaii County Police Department news release.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3 a.m. today.

Police believe speed was a possible factor. The 30-year-old man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The police department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated an investigation and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 808-326-4646.

This is the second traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island this year. There were no traffic fatalities on the island at the same time last year.
