The Hawaiian Humane Society is pushing forward a bill this legislative session that would give restaurant owners the discretion to adopt dog-friendly policies. Pictured is Sinziana Cighiartau chatting with a friend as her Maltese Terrier, “Lucky,” sat nearby in front of Arvo Café in Kakaako on Saturday. SALT at Kakaako, where the café is located, allows dogs in the outdoor areas.

I support the Hawaiian Humane Society’s bill that would allow pet dogs to accompany their human guardians to a cafe or restaurant on Oahu.
I have been a dog mom for 26 years. All of my dogs have been through obedience school; some competed and earned obedience titles. I know my dogs will behave if I take them to an outdoor restaurant, and I have had no problems in the past.
After spending all day at work and leaving my dogs in the house, it would be a pleasure to take them with me to an outdoor restaurant. Whenever I take my dogs out, so many people want to say hello.
The bill has many safeguards. Dogs must be non-aggressive. Restaurants may evict the dog and owner if there is a problem.
The bill gives restaurants with outdoor seating areas the freedom to open up to a wide variety of clients without discriminating against the family member who happens to be a canine.
