Big Island police have identified skeletal remains found last month on an empty lot off of Alii Drive in Kona as those of 52-year-old Kevin Anderson, according to the Hawaii County Police Department. A positive identification was established using dental records.
Anderson, of Kona, was reported missing on July 18, 2013, by his mother after he failed to return to his home between 10 a.m. and noon that day, according to police. Anderson had left his residence on foot to go swimming at Honl’s Beach. The remains were found Dec. 12.
An investigation to determine the cause of his death continues.

Park bandstand reopens 2 months after vandalism
The Waimea Park Bandstand, closed since November to repair damage caused by vandals, reopened today. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily except on holidays.
The vandalism, which included smashed toilets and sinks, and damage to a water fountain and maintenance storage lockers, occurred during the early hours of Nov. 8, only about a month after Hawaii County had installed new sinks and toilets in the park’s bathrooms, according to county officials.
“Our maintenance staff completed repairs to the damaged structures and our plumbers replaced all of the toilets and sinks that were damaged,” said Roxcie Waltjen, director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “We appreciate the public’s patience during this closure and thank our employees for the hard work that went into quickly repairing the facility.”
She said the new repairs cost taxpayers over $14,000.
