Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros and Waianae’s Rachael Ostovich were both stopped in the second round of their fights tonight at UFC Fight Night 143 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Ostovich was forced to tap out to an armbar in the second round by Paige VanZant in a flyweight bout.

Ostovich (4-5, 1-2 UFC) controlled the fight until she tried to climb on VanZant’s back midway through the second round. She slid off onto the ground allowing VanZant to take Ostovich’s back and eventually work the armbar submission.

Ostovich looked like she was going to slip out of the submission when she quickly tapped out at 1 minute, 50 seconds.

“She tapped on my hip. I heard her arm pop a little,” VanZant (8-4, 5-3) said after the fight. “Hopefully it’s nothing serious.”

Ostovich scored multiple takedowns in the first round and clipped VanZant with an overhand right. She got the better of the scrambling exchanges and was ahead 10-9 on the Star-Advertiser’s scorecard after the first round.

“I probably scared a few of you during the first round,” VanZant said in the cage. “Obviously I still have a lot to work on.”

Ostovich has lost consecutive fights for the first time in her career.

The Moanalua alumna fought just two months after she was the victim of an assault at a Waianae home. Her husband, Arnold Berdon, was arrested for second-degree assault and has since pled not guilty.

VanZant joined Ronda Rousey as the only women in UFC history to win more than one fight by armbar submission.

Medeiros was stopped with one second remaining in the second round by Gregor Gillespie, who improved to 6-0 in his UFC career.

Gillespie mauled Medeiros (15-6, 6-6) the entire fight and allowed Medeiros to land only one strike.

Medeiros fought at 155 pounds after competing at welterweight in his previous four bouts, going 3-1.
