Letter: Lend support for Discovery Center

We have taken our daughter to the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center in the past and it was a wonderful learning experience for her and her friends.

Loretta Yajima said that she and her board of directors will discuss closing the center (“Homeless may force center to close,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Jan. 16), and, considering that possible outcome, laments that “it pains me to a degree that few may comprehend.”

We applaud Yajima for her 30-plus years of devotion, commitment, dedication and hard work to a high and noble cause. We are not among the few who can comprehend her pain, but knowing how she and her staff have labored so hard to keep the center open and inviting, we too feel pain.

But we also felt disgusted and angry that this situation has been allowed to go this far for this long. We will volunteer at the center to help where we can; we will contact our politicians to complain; and we will let our friends, family and cohorts know about her plight.

We hope all of you who read this will do the same.
