The second round did in both fighters from Hawaii on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 143 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Waianae’s Rachael Ostovich was submitted by Paige VanZant with 1:50 on the clock. Two fights later, Makaha’s Yancy Medeiros was stopped by Gregor Gillespie in the final second before the bell sounded.
Ostovich (4-5, 1-2 UFC) made a triumphant walk to the cage fighting just two months after she was the victim of a domestic violence incident at a home in Waianae.
The Moanalua alumna controlled the first round with multiple takedowns and an overhand right that put VanZant on the canvas.
She again started strong in the second round but got in trouble when she tried to climb on VanZant’s back and slipped off to the ground.
VanZant was able to then take Ostovich’s back. Ostovich looked like she was about to get away from danger when she quickly and suddenly tapped out.
“She tapped on my hip. I heard her arm pop a little,” VanZant (8-4, 5-3) said after the fight. “Hopefully it’s nothing serious.”
The Star-Advertiser had Ostovich ahead 10-9 in the fight after winning the first round.
“I probably scared a few of you during the first round,” VanZant said in the cage. “Obviously I still have a lot to work on.”
Ostovich has lost consecutive fights for the first time in her career.
VanZant joined Ronda Rousey as the only women in UFC history to win more than one fight by armbar submission.
Medeiros fought the undefeated Gillespie at lightweight after competing at welterweight in his last four fights, going 3-1.
Fighting for the first time since losing to Donald Cerrone in February 2018, Medeiros (15-6, 6-6) was mauled the entire fight by Gillespie (13-0, 6-0).
Medeiros landed only one strike in the 10-minute fight as Gillespie controlled his opponent with his wrestling. He eventually stretched out Medeiros on his back and threw a series of punches that forced the referee to come in and stop it.
This was the first UFC event broadcast on ESPN networks after the two companies came together on a five-year deal worth $1.5 billion. The UFC’s previous TV deal was with Fox.
