I read with unease and alarm the letter supporting the legalization of cannabis in Hawaii, as an economic boon for our state (“Legalize cannabis to benefit Hawaii,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 23).
Does anyone who has ever taken a prescription read the warnings about driving while on drugs? Marijuana is a drug.
We still have enough problems with drunken drivers causing death and maiming in this state without adding to the horrors caused by driving under the influence of marijuana.
Pick up a newspaper or go online and look at the articles and statistics in the states that have legalized pot. You will see the numbers of accidents and deaths from accidents in these states are way up.
Revenue for the homeless problem as well as the rail project could come from other, long-neglected sources:
Fine drivers for not using their turn signals, for running red lights or speeding through yellow lights. Fine drivers for not giving way to pedestrians who have the right of way. Fine drivers who block intersections, especially at rush hour.
Lastly, do not legalize recreational marijuana in Hawaii.
