Letter: Driver should flash brake lights instead

There are several reasons, mentioned by safety officials and police, as to why drivers should not use their emergency hazard lights on multiple-lane roads to warn other drivers that pedestrians are crossing in front of them.

Perhaps a better, equally effective and much more simple method is to have drivers flash their brake lights (pump their brake pedal multiple times).

Otherwise, many approaching drivers may be distracted looking for the hazard light button, and they won’t forget to turn them off and continue driving with their emergency flashers on. This can cause unnecessary confusion, distraction, quick lane changes and safety problems among nearby drivers on the same side of the road approaching the crosswalk.
