I am all for having a flood-prevention action plan for the Ala Wai Canal (“Ala Wai Flood Control Project under fire,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 5).
What we need is a model of what the detention basins will look like and whether the 4-foot wall along the Ala Wai Canal will be designed with a Hawaiian theme so as to attract the many walkers like it does now, making it a destination for many visitors with the Koolau mountains serving as a colorful backdrop.
A plain concrete wall might attract too many graffiti artists and cost much in maintenance.
In addition, what steps will be taken to make sure that the floodwater detention basins will not just result in murky backwater pools that stagnate?
