Micah Williams made the most of his moment Friday night.
The Punahou striker stood alone at the penalty-kick line, awaiting a chance to finally put Mililani away. He paused and then let go a rip to the high right corner to give the Buffanblu a 3-2 (5-3 PKs) victory over the Trojans in the Division I final of The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships.
All of the PK shooters after 80 minutes of regulation and 20 of overtime succeeded except one. Mililani goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston, who was also called upon to take the Trojans’ first try, hit the crossbar. It put Williams, Punahou’s fifth shooter, on the hot seat. Had he missed, Mililani would have had a chance to tie.
“The important thing is it went in,” Williams said. “After last year’s loss to Baldwin (in the semifinals), all we wanted to do was get back in the final. Mililani played a great game. Its unfortunate for them that they left the tournament early, but we’re excited for tomorrow and we’ll put our best foot forward.”
With one more victory — in the final tonight against ‘Iolani — Punahou (11-1-2) can sew up a 21st D-I state title in the 45 years of the event.
“It was entertaining,” Buffanblu coach David Trifonovitch said about the match. “It was a tale of two halves. We did really well in the first half and they played to their strength in the second half. It came down to a roll the dice in this shootout thing and we got lucky. We were able to bury them all and we practiced them. In that second half, they came out with intensity and we were having to match it and it was difficult.”
Trailing 2-0, Mililani (14-2) started to attack with a vengeance.
In the 47th minute, Ayden Lawes headed home Jvon Cunningham’s corner kick to make it 2-1. Kekoa Kuloloia tied it 2-all by heading in Liam McGehee’s corner kick in the 62nd minute.
Punahou had grabbed a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Dominic Gusman and Johnnie Dodge. Gusman’s goal came on a sweet chip pass from the outside by Kobi Saito.
The Trojans were trying for their seventh D-I state title. They didn’t go down easy.
Lawes still had tears in his eyes 10 minutes afterward.
“It stings,” he said. “You never want to lose. It’s tough how we lost. We came back hard, scoring two goals, and felt really confident.
“It’s tough. For us seniors, it’s over. We’re sad. We can only hope that the underclassmen, the juniors, can bring it home next year.”
‘Iolani 3, Kapolei 2
The Raiders awoke from their slumber with three late goals to upset the fourth-seeded and OIA champion Hurricanes in the late semifinal. Lincoln Oishi scored back-to-back goals for ‘Iolani (13-2-1) in the 59th and 61st minutes to bring his team back from a one-goal deficit.
Just six minutes later, Wailoa Manuel’s goal gave the ILH runner-up Raiders a 3-1 edge.
It was a frantic finish as Kapolei pressured and broke through with Joe Wren’s goal that made it 3-2 with less than two minutes left in stoppage time.
‘Iolani’s win makes it an all-ILH final tonight. The opponent is Punahou, which defeated the Raiders 4-1 in the league championship game.
Kapolei (12-2) was in firm control most of the way, and it appeared the Hurricanes were on their way to a spot in the final. Cypress Navarro-Acio gave them a 1-0 first half lead.
Kapolei threatened, only to have Raiders goalkeeper Isaak Tanaka rob a bullet by Kapolei’s Tommy Mascaro-Keahi. It then looked like Mascaro-Keahi would give his team a two-goal lead when he beat Tanaka to a loose ball and pushed it forward from about 18 yards out toward the goal. Amazingly, ’Iolani defender Jacob Lee hustled to the ball and got there just in time to boot it away before it crossed the line.
