For the first time since 2015, a team from the Big Island will not be the Division II champion in The Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer Championships.
The koa trophy, however, may stay on the neighbor islands, but that’s only if Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion Kapaa prevails over ILH D-II winner Saint Louis in tonight’s final.
The second-seeded Crusaders (10-2-2) and fourth-seeded Warriors (11-1-1) advanced with semifinal victories on Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Kapaa 3, Kamehameha-Hawaii 1
The Garden Isle Warriors erupted for the win to dethrone the Big Isle’s Warriors in a rematch of last year’s title match.
Johnny Movaghar scored in the first minute for Kapaa and then again in the 73rd minute before Ryan Banasihan tacked on one more three minutes later.
With less than two minutes left in the contest, Buddy Betts had the lone goal for top-seeded and BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii (12-6-1), which will play Kalaheo for third place today.
Saint Louis 1, Kalaheo 0
Skyler Goo’s first-half goal was enough to put the Crusaders in the title match for the first time since 2017, when they dropped a 2-1 decision to Hawaii Prep.
The OIA champion and third-seeded Mustangs (11-3) will play today for third place.
