Hawaii freshman Izzy Dino tossed a six-inning no-hitter to earn her first collegiate victory in the Rainbow Wahine softball team’s 8-0 win against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Dino struck out five, walked two and worked around two UH errors. The 6-foot-2 right-hander threw 44 of her 66 pitches for strikes and induced 13 ground-ball outs.
The bottom third of the UH order went a combined 7-for-9, with Mikaela Gandia-Mak and Sissy Pantastico driving in two runs each and Heather Cameron adding another RBI.
In the tournament finale, UH junior Callee Heen hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Wahine held on for a 7-6 win over Fresno State.
UH sophomore Emily Klee earned the win in relief of Brittany Hitchcock. Klee allowed one run on three hits in 2 2⁄3 innings and ended the game with her second strikeout with the tying run on third.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-1) embark on their first road trip this week and open the three-day Boyd Gaming Rebel Classic against BYU on Thursday in Las Vegas.
Cowboys win Amer Ari Invitational
Oklahoma State’s Matthew Wolff carded a 7-under-par 65 on Saturday to claim individual medalist honors and lead the Cowboys to the Amer Ari Invitational title at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
Wolff posted a three-round total of 18-under 198 to finish three shots ahead of teammate Zach Bauchou and Oregon’s Edwin Yi. Hawaii Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita shot a 70 in the final round and tied for 12th at 7 under. USC’s Kyle Suppa, a Punahou graduate, was also part of the group at 7 under.
Oklahoma State finished with a total of 47 under, 10 shots ahead of runner-up Auburn, to defend its tournament title. UH Hilo placed 17th at 19 over, followed by UH Manoa.
HPU, UH Hilo post softball upsets
The Hawaii Pacific University split contests against nationally ranked opponents on the final day of the Dixie State Courtyard Classic in St. George, Utah.
No. 21 Colorado Mesa hit three home runs in a 9-1 victory over the Sharks. HPU senior Jordan Curry then earned a complete-game victory and drove in a run in the Sharks’ 6-2 upset of No. 17 Dixie State.
UH Hilo handed Colorado Mesa its first loss with a two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-3 victory. Isabelle Mejia, who earned a complete-game win, doubled to drive in Rayla Jacobs-Kea and Brinell Kaleikini followed with a single to score Mejia with the winning run.
UH earns tennis win over Pacific
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team pulled out three-set wins in five singles matches and rolled past Pacific 8-1 on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Andre Ilagan, Lucas Labrunie, Blaz Seric and Simon Telo Alves all rallied from a set down to earn singles wins. Tristan Martins dropped the second set before pulling the third. The Rainbow Warriors swept all three doubles matches.
Vulcans edge Sharks in baseball
Kyle Yamada’s one-out single to center in the bottom of the 12th inning drove in Mana Manago with the winning run, giving Hawaii Hilo a 5-4 victory over Hawaii Pacific in a scheduled baseball doubleheader Saturday at Wong Stadium.
The second game was not completed by the Star-Advertiser’s deadline.
The Sharks (6-2) had forced extra innings on Christian Kapeliela’s two-out single that scored Micah Layosa. The Vulcans improved to 2-1.
