A convicted felon,
who already was awaiting trial in state court in another case for attempted murder, is facing additional charges for
a fatal hit-and-run crash in Whitmore Village.
Prosecutors filed
papers in court Monday charging Gary McCormick Fesagaiga, 35, with negligent homicide, negligent injury and fleeing the scene of the crash.
Honolulu police said Candice Gilfillan, 37,
and a 29-year-old woman were injured Nov. 21 when another car rammed their car from behind on Whitmore
Avenue. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene.
The other woman went to the hospital in serious condition. Gilfillan went to the hospital in critical condition where she died Dec. 31.
Police initially classified the case as a murder.
At the time of the crash, McCormick Fesagaiga was free on $250,000 bail for a 2017 attempted murder case.
Prosecutors said
McCormick Fesagaiga fired four shots from a handgun at his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend Dec. 11, 2017, in Wahiawa. The ex-boyfriend was driving when he
was shot at. They said McCormick Fesagaiga, who was in a car with
his girlfriend, stepped out of the vehicle to fire the shots.
McCormick Fesagaiga is charged with attempted murder, using a firearm to commit the crime, carrying a firearm without a license and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to stand trial in April.
He pleaded guilty in April 2003 to first-degree assault, and was later sentenced to 10 years in prison, for taking part in a fatal beating in a Wahiawa apartment complex when he was 18 years old.
