High-rise housing is needed but using proximity to rail in Kakaako as justification is ludicrous (“2 lawmakers criticize bills seeking to redraw skyline,” Star-Advertiser, Feb. 12). People live downtown to be near their jobs and recreational venues, no more than a short bus ride away. How many people with jobs in Kapolei look for housing downtown?
The place to build high-rises of varying heights is in Ewa — for example, in a cluster around the University of Hawaii-West Oahu’s rail station — or later in Kalaeloa when rail is extended (hopefully with modern magnetic levitation technology).
High-rises there will not block view planes. With interesting designs, drivers on H-1 would have something to look at compared to currently bland views.
We cannot “keep the country, country” in West Oahu, but high-rises can reduce urban sprawl and provide affordable housing for those unable to purchase single-family homes. It also will entice more commuters to use rail. Plan ahead.
