WAIPAHU HIGH FRIENDS PLAN DINNER
Culinary students at Waipahu High School have set the menu for a kickoff event for a nonprofit that will support school programs.
The menu for the March 9 Friends of Waipahu High School event spans the globe. Among items: Filipino lechon kawali, Chinese-style steamed fish and cold ginger chicken, Samoan palusami (similar to laulau with corned beef and coconut milk), Japanese sushi, Middle Eastern hummus and flatbread, Hawaiian poke, Italian chicken with arancini.
The event, 5 to 8 p.m. on campus, includes entertainment and a silent auction.

EVENT PROMOTES SCHOOL GARDENS
Another benefit for local schools takes place on Maui, also on March 9 — Taste of School Gardens at Maui Tropical Plantation.
The host is Grow Some Good, a nonprofit that funds gardens at elementary and middle schools, along with educational programs on science, nature, nutrition and the environment.
Participating chefs come from Maui restaurants and food purveyors including Duo Steak and Seafood, Fork & Salad, Maui Breadfruit Co., Outrigger Pizza Co., Old Lahaina Luau, Mill House, Fleetwood’s on Front St., Sarento’s on the Beach, Taverna and Moku Roots. Many of these chefs work with students year-round through Grow Some Good.
The event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $150, including wine and local beers, entertainment and live and silent auctions.
VIP tables are $800 for four and $1,600 for eight. VIP service includes a tableside sommelier. For tickets go to growsomegood.org/events.
KCC INTRODUCES SUNDAY BUFFETS
Multitask on a Sunday in the best way possible: Have a great meal, at a great deal, and help forward culinary education in the process, at a special brunch at Ka ‘Ikena Laua‘e, the fine-dining restaurant operated by Kapiolani Community College students on the college’s campus.
Once a month, the restaurant is offering a themed Sunday brunch buffet. This week, the spread is inspired by Children’s Day and features a sushi station and a menu that includes somen, tofu and hijiki salads, tempura, okonomiyaki, rafute, red fish over soba and Japanese desserts. Cost is $55, $48 for ages 6 to 10.
On April 21, Easter Sunday, the menu includes salmon en croute, roasted tenderloin, spinach mushroom quiche, chicken roulade and desserts of chocolate fondue, blueberry sour cream coffee cake and breakfast berry parfaits. Cost: $60, $53 children.
The lineup for the rest of the year: May 12 (Mother’s Day), June 16 (Father’s Day), July 7 (American BBQ), Aug. 4 (luau), Sept. 1 (Oktoberfest), Oct. 6 (Great Pumpkin King’s Fall Harvest), Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day) and Dec. 15 (holiday buffet) with a prime-rib carving station and seafood station.
