The Hawaii baseball team will be without two key starters for tonight’s series finale against Longwood at Les Murakami Stadium.
Catcher Dallas Duarte, who suffered a sprained ankle on Sunday, and center fielder Adam Fogel, who did not play that day because of a shoulder ailment, were still “sore” on Monday, according to UH coach Mike Trapasso.
“As sore as (Duarte) was, it would be a great recovery for him to be able to play,” Trapasso said. “While we would love for him to play, that might not be the most wise thing to do.”
Fogel suffered the injury to his right (throwing) shoulder on an eighth-inning slide on Saturday. He did not return to the outfield for the ninth inning. In 2016, Fogel missed his senior season at Palos Verdes (Calif.) High because of an injury to that same shoulder.
Fogel and right-handed pitcher Aaron Davenport were expected to undergo MRI tests on Monday night or this morning. Both will meet with the doctor on Wednesday.
In the most hopeful diagnosis, Trapasso said, Fogel will be able to be used as a designated hitter in the four-game series against Oregon, which begins on Thursday. “The swing will come back before the throw,” Trapasso said. “We’re hoping the swing is pain free over the next couple days.”
Davenport departed Sunday’s game with soreness in his right shoulder. Trapasso said Davenport experienced a “lack of soreness” on Monday, but there will be no determination on his status until after the MRI. “If you take yourself out of a game and come walking off the mound, to just say it’s a one-time thing and he’s back the very next week, I don’t know if that’s the most wise thing to do,” Trapasso said. “We’ll let the (medical) professionals make that decision.”
Trapasso said Tyler Murray, who has recovered from an offseason wrist injury, will catch in place of Duarte tonight. “It’s time for him to get going,” Trapasso said of Murray. “The swing will be lagging a little bit, but it’s not like it’s been non-existent.”
Dominic DeMiero, who has not pitched in two weeks, will start for the ’Bows tonight. DeMiero was shut down at the end of the 2018 season because of tendinitis in his left shoulder. He has had problems in the back of that shoulder, leading to difficulties with range of motion. But Trapasso said DeMiero pitched well in a bullpen session on Saturday. “He’s ready to get back out there,” Trapasso said.
Trapasso said Logan Pouelsen, who doubles as a designated hitter, and Cade Halemanu are available to pitch tonight.
Freshman Li‘i Pontes will start Thursday’s game against Oregon.
