I am saddened to read that University of Hawaii law school Dean Avi Soifer is retiring (“University of Hawaii law school dean Avi Soifer to retire,” Star-Advertiser, March 4). He has accomplished many good things for the school. I have been closely following the activities of the school since it opened in 1973.
Through his stewardship, the school has made many remarkable advancements. It is now one of the best law schools in the nation. Some of its graduates became state judges and county prosecuting attorneys.
One of his accomplishments I admire most is the creation of the law school evening program, which enables students underrepresented in the legal profession to attend law school. Having once been a working law student back home, I know working students strive hard to do well in school.
I sincerely commend Dean Soifer and his staff for making the school what it is today.
