Bicyclist in serious condition after truck hits him in Kakaako

A 39-year-old bicyclist was critically injured Friday night in the Kakaako area when a Toyota pickup truck struck him.

Honolulu police said the bicyclist was headed north on Ward Avenue when he crossed the center line to enter the left-turn lane just before Kapiolani Boulevard.

The pickup truck driver, a 32-year-old man, was heading in the same direction and also crossed the center line to enter the left-turn lane, and hit the bicyclist at about 7:19 p.m.

Police closed off Ward makai-bound lanes between Kapiolani and Waimanu Street. Those lanes were reopened just before 9 p.m.

Police said the bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken in critical condition with possible head injuries to the hospital. He was later upgraded to serious condition.

The truck driver was not injured.

Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be contributing factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
