Ehime Prefecture receives box of cash from mystery sender

YOMIURI / JAPAN NEWS

A large quantity of 10,000 bills that was delivered to the Ehime Prefecture governor, with some bills so worn out that it is difficult to determine whether they are genuine.

MATSUYAMA >> Ehime Prefecture received a cardboard box containing a large quantity of 10,000 yen bills, the prefectural government announced.

According to the local government, the cardboard box was sent to the governor in late January. The bills will total about $907,000 if they are all real.

The name and address of the sender are fictitious, and no theft or loss has been reported, according to the government.

“We appreciate the money as a donation and will use it for the reconstruction of areas affected by the heavy rain in western Japan,” Gov. Tokihiro Nakamura said.

According to the prefecture, several hundred of the 10,000 yen bills are bundled, and the surfaces of some are so dirty that it is difficult to determine whether they are real. The money was delivered via a parcel delivery service, together with a letter saying, “Please use the money for something good, and leave me in peace.”

Since the bills do not have a printed hologram, they were apparently issued no later than 2004.
