Saint Mary’s routs Hawaii in Women’s NIT first round

The Rainbow Wahine basketball season came to an inglorious end Friday in a Women’s NIT first-round game in Moraga, Calif., as Hawaii lost to host Saint Mary’s 67-43.

The Wahine (15-17) came out of the gate in solid fashion, taking a 15-14 lead after one quarter, but the game turned in the middle quarters, as the Gaels (21-11) outscored UH 40-14 to take a 54-29 lead after three periods. The Wahine never challenged in the fourth.

Sophomore Amy Atwell led Hawaii with 12 points. UH’s four seniors totaled nine points in the final game of their Wahine careers — four for Tia Kanoa, three for Lahni Salanoa, two for Leah Salanoa and zero for Rachel Odumu. Hawaii shot 25 percent from the field (15-for-60), while the Gaels shot 47.3 percent.
