No. 6 Hawaii opened the Arizona State Invitational beach volleyball tournament Friday with a split on the first day at the PERA Club in Tempe, Ariz., falling to No. 5 Pepperdine 3-2 and sweeping the host Sun Devils.
It was the second time this season that the Rainbow Wahine (12-5) lost to the Waves 3-2, the first coming on opening day in Honolulu. On Friday, Pepperdine (13-6) went up 2-0, then clinched the match at the No. 2 Flight when Deahna Kraft-Gigi Hernandez swept Julia Scoles-Ari Homayun 23-21, 21-15 to snap Hawaii’s seven-match winning streak.
It was just the third loss in 15 matches for Scoles-Homayun. Hawaii picked up its points at Nos. 1 and 3.
“I’m happy with our win over ASU, almost a sweep when dropping one set,” Hawaii coach Jeff Hall said. “I feel like we let another one get away from us with Pepperdine. It’s always a great duel when we play them, but we didn’t play as well as we are capable. We have to keep getting better.”
In the second match, Hawaii won in straight sets in four out of five matches to improve to 5-0 against the Sun Devils all-time. The only one that went three was at No. 4, where Kylin Loker-Hi’ilawe Huddleston held off Sam Plaster-Kate Baldwin 21-18, 19-21, 15-12.
The SandBows are back at the PERA Club today, facing No. 2 USC and then ASU.
