As a four-year varsity Division I college athlete (not at the University of Hawaii), I enjoy reading Ferd Lewis’ columns, including his Monday effort (“UH campus is no place for a football stadium,” Star-Advertiser, March 18).
Although he makes several good points, he fumbled the opportunity to connect the dots and make another important point. The recent traffic fiascos due to concurrent on-campus events indicates a genuine lack of concern by UH to make sure that its “customers” (students, alumni, visitors) have a good experience when coming onto campus.
These multiple-event days aren’t due to last-minute schedule changes. The athletics director and other in the administration consistently have shown complete disregard for optimizing our experience. How hard is it to set up ancillary parking, schedule shuttle service, and have traffic control assistance on these days?
Apparently a lot harder than worrying about having fans “turn around and head back home,” reducing both attendance and revenue. It’s no wonder that UH athletics runs a deficit, and that fundraising falls behind other schools of similar size, and even many much smaller institutions, that care about our experience.
