Educator Betty White, who will retire in July after 48 years at Sacred Hearts Academy, has been named winner of the Ransome Prize for her contributions to girls’ education. She will receive the award from the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools at its 2019 conference in Los Angeles on June 25. The coalition is dedicated to educating and empowering girls, a mission White embraced her entire career.
White started at Sacred Hearts as a teacher and has been head of school since 1991. As its first lay leader, she guided Sacred Hearts from religious to lay instruction and upgraded the campus with new centers for performing and visual arts, a student center and science and computer labs.
Under her leadership, Sacred Hearts also offered workshops and symposiums in science, engineering, technology and personal financial education that were open to all girls in the community.
College counselors advise at free events
Parents can learn the basics of financial aid and how to find the right campus for their college-bound students at free workshops today sponsored by the nonprofit Hawaii Association for College Admission Counseling.
The first event, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Kapolei Public Library, will cover two topics: “College Fit: Finding the Right Academic, Social and Financial Fit” and “Intro to Financial Aid: Understanding the Basics to Make Informed Financial Decisions About College.”
The second workshop, from noon to 1:15 p.m. at the Hawaii State Public Library, will focus on financial aid.
The community presentations are designed for high school students and their parents, although younger students and their families are welcome to attend, according to an HACAC news release.
