Hawaii island police are seeking witnesses of a March shooting that seriously injured a 37-year-old man in North Kohala.

Officers responded to a report of a person who appeared to be in distress in the area of the Waianaia Gulch near the 24-mile marker on Route 270 on the morning of March 27.

When they approached the 37-year-old man, police said officers heard a single gunshot that came from an unknown location and struck the man.

Police said the victim was taken to a medical facility in serious condition.

A light gold or beige four-door sedan was observed parked on the makai shoulder facing Kapaau Town with a man near the vehicle around the time of the shooting.

Anyone who may have been in the area and observed the sedan or the man near the vehicle is asked to call Det. Donovan Kohara at 808-960-3118 or email at donovan.kohara@hawaiicounty.gov.
