Former Hawaii volleyball players Karissa Cook, Katie Spieler and Emily Hartong helped the U.S. to a silver medal at the first stop of the inaugural FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour in Wagrain-Kleinarl, Austria.
Cook and Spieler, both All-Americans in beach volleyball, and Hartong, an indoor All-American, went 4-0 heading into the final with Russia in the eight-team field. The U.S. lost in the gold-medal match 19-17, 15-8.
The Americans swept Japan and Germany in pool play, swept Lithuania in the quarterfinals and the Czech Republic in the semis. The format was three-person played outdoors in the snow.
The second stop begins today at Plan de Corones, Italy.
