Larry Kamalii was charged with second-degree escape.

Prosecutors charged a 36-year-old Hilo man after he allegedly escaped from the Hale Nani Reintegration Center on Hawaii island.

Larry Kamalii was charged with second-degree escape. His bail is set at $25,000.

The Hawaii Department of Public Safety said Kamalii was seen running from the back side of the center at about 3:15 p.m. on March 1. Security staff immediately notified the police.

Acting on a tip, authorities apprehended him in Mountain View at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Kamalii is serving time for promoting a dangerous drug in the third degree, possession of a firearm and place to keep a firearm.

Hale Nani is a reintegration program of the Hawaii Community Correctional Center. It is located about five miles away from the correctional facility.
