A fisherman died after being swept out into the ocean when he ran into trouble while fishing just outside of Hanauma Bay Thursday night.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified him today as Brandt Y. Miyashiro, 34, of Honolulu. Cause of death is pending.

Six Honolulu Fire Department units including the Air 1 helicopter responded to a report of a man in his 30s who was swept into the ocean while fishing at a spot outside of the bay at about 9:10 p.m. Thursday.

Two other fishermen called 911 to report the man in distress.

HFD spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said search efforts were limited to an aerial search due to rough ocean conditions.

Air 1 located the missing fisherman on the water’s surface about 200 yards from shore.

He was brought to shore and pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m.
