The Hawaii softball team returned from sweeping a three-game road trip to top UC Santa Barbara for a 4-1 victory on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
All of the Wahine’s runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Hawaii (25-10, 6-1 Big West) was led by reigning conference player of the week Callee Heen, who broke a 1-1 tie with her league-leading 12th home run, a three-run shot over right-center.
Senior Brittany Hitchcock (13-5, 5-0) tossed a complete game, giving up six hits and striking out four. The Gauchos dropped to 7-31 and 1-6.
The teams conclude the series today with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. A sweep of the twinbill would give Wahine coach Bob Coolen his 1,000th win in Manoa.
Hilo softball dominates Academy of Art
The Hawaii Hilo softball team rolled over the Academy of Art for a pair of PacWest victories, 10-1 and 9-3 on Friday at Kealakehe High.
Sophomore Kiarra Lincoln led the Vulcans (27-14, 20-8 PacWest), going 4-for-5 on the day with five RBIs. Senior pitcher Isabelle Mejia earned the win in the opener that went five innings, allowing four hits and striking out six batters.
The Vulcans are 6-0 at when playing at Kealakehe this season and remain in second place in the PacWest. The Urban Knights dropped to 13-14 and 9-8.
