State officials said Friday morning and afternoon access to the Pali Highway will remain the same as in past months, but that some lane closures and shifting will be necessary, starting Monday.

According to the state Department of Transportation, access to the Pali Highway will remain as follows in April:

>> 5 to 9 a.m. contraflow in the Honolulu-bound direction.

>> 3 to 7 p.m. Windward-bound lanes will remain.

Starting Monday, however, lanes will shift so crews can remove an 1,800-foot section of pavement in the right lane of the Kailua bound direction near Upper Nuuanu Pali Drive. The right lane will be closed Monday through May 3, requiring that one lane shift to the Honolulu bound side.

Transportation officials said the lane shifts will be as follows:

>> Starting at the Upper Nuuanu Pali Drive, one left lane will cross over into the left lane of the Honolulu-bound direction on the other side of the median. The right lane will shift into the left lane on the Kailua-bound side. All lanes will shift back to the Kailua bound side before the entrance to the tunnels, which will continue to offer two lanes.

Drivers should follow cones and signage throughout the route.

The following lane closures will also be implemented on Pali Highway through August as crews install a new concrete median barrier with street lights:

>> Left lane closure in Kailua-bound direction: Starting April 29, crews will close the left lane weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. for six to eight weeks, weather permitting, leaving two accessible lanes to the public. Crews must close the lane to install a 4,000-foot concrete drainage gutter and curb on the left side of the Pali Highway after the Waokanaka Street intersection.

>> Beginning April 29, all Honolulu-bound lanes of the Pali Highway between Wyllie Street and Pauoa Road will be closed from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists will be detoured at Wyllie Street and continue makai/southbound on Nuuanu Avenue, then turn left (Diamond Head/east) on Pauoa Road, then right (makai/south) on Funchal Street to reconnect with the Pali Highway.

>> Beginning April 29, the left lane between Pauoa Road and Wyllie Street, Kailua-bound, will be closed from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. On some occasions, an additional one-lane closure may also be necessary fro 2:30 to 5 .m. in both directions.

Pali Highway is expected to reopen fully by the end of August.

State officials said they tried to coordinate the work hours with existing closures on Pali Highway so that it could be completed quickly. Repaving of Pali Highway, Honolulu bound, is also expected to be done by the end of August.
