Honolulu police officer arrested for domestic abuse

A Honolulu police officer with multiple run-ins with the law was arrested for felony abuse of a household member, the Honolulu Police Department said.

Darren Cachola was in custody Tuesday night at Honolulu’s main station, according to an official.

In 2014, the police sergeant was stripped of his gun and badge after surveillance video showed Cachola in a brawl with his former girlfriend in a Waipahu restaurant.

Cachola was fired but subsequently won his job back.

The annual report filed by Honolulu police this year said the department fired the officer involved in that case, but an arbitrator reversed that decision. In the end, the incident resulted in a six-month suspension, and the case was referred to prosecutors.

The officer was named in a 2006 lawsuit after he allegedly kicked and broke a rib of a motorcyclist during a traffic stop.

State lawmakers are again considering a bill to require that police departments disclose the names of officers suspended or fired for misconduct.
