The latest U.S. Census Bureau data on Hawaii, released Thursday, sketches a shifting profile.
Among the state’s counties, Honolulu marked the biggest population drop between 2010 and 2018, having posted a net loss of more than 61,700 residents from domestic migration — residents leaving for the mainland versus new arrivals.
Factors such as the strong economy on the mainland, the high cost of living here and military deployment spurred departures.
Even so, Honolulu’s overall population grew 4.4% over the eight-year span to 980,000 due to net international migration and net “natural” increase of births versus deaths.
