University of Hawaii baseball team loses on late grand slam

Blake Doremus rocketed a grand slam to power Cal State Northridge to a 6-3 baseball victory over Hawaii today at Matador Field on the CSUN campus.

Scotty Scott’s RBI single gave the Rainbow Warriors a 3-2 lead in the sixth.

In the seventh, UH reliever Jeremy Wu-Yelland issued a one-out walk and single. Calvin Turchin replaced Wu-Yelland, and walked Sean Skelly to load the bases. Left-swinging Doremus was summoned as a pinch hitter to face right-handed Turchin. Doremus drove Turchin’s 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to give the Matadors their first lead of the game.

The Matadors won the final two of this three-game series. The ’Bows fell to 18-22 overall and 7-8 in the Big West.

The ’Bows’ 13-day trip continues with Tuesday’s non-conference game against Cal Baptist.
