Firefighters on Sunday afternoon assisted a group of hikers stranded at Iao Valley State Park. A total of five individuals made the hike into the valley, but two were unable to make it back out due to rising stream waters, according to a statement from the Maui Fire Department. It was raining at the time of the rescue.

Firefighters were able to run a rope system and provide life jackets to help the two female hikers across the river and back to safety. The rescue took just under an hour. Firefighters were called to the scene at 2:39 p.m. and left at 3:22 p.m.
