Hawaii County firefighters rescue a pit bull today after the dog fell 40 feet off a cliff in pursuit of a mongoose.

An 8-year-old pit bull mix that chased a mongoose right off an 80-foot, steep, brushy hillside in the Honolii area on the Big Island was rescued by the Hawaii County Fire Department Monday and reunited with its owner.

The mostly white pooch wound up on a small outcropping 40 feet down. The hillside fronts the southern end of Kahoa Street.

The dog’s owner called the Fire Department, and a five-person crew from the Waiakea rescue station responded on the special service/rescue call to assess the situation and located the pet, according to the Fire Department.

Firefighters set up a rope-and-pulley system and lowered a rescue specialist who connected a rope to the dog’s chest harness.

“Both dog and rescueman were raised back to the top and the dog was reunited with owner,” the Fire Department said in a release.
