Again, the public’s comments are being ignored by the politicians. Add Sherwood Forest to the list of parks — Ala Moana’s zip line and Kawainui Marsh’s canoe structure and parking lot — set for expansion without support from the community. Waimanalo Beach Park already has football, baseball and soccer fields in place.
Councilman Ikaika Anderson claims these fields are unusable because the soil is clay and won’t support grass. Meanwhile he supports some $20 million to clearcut Sherwood Forest for more parking and field development. He also claims these plans have been in the works for a long period of time. Now members of the public are beginning to see its real effect and have changed their minds.
I’ll bet if the Waimanalo fields were tilled with locally cut tree mulch and properly irrigated, they would be just fine — and cost much less money. All of this will only lead to more development, which is what the public is concerned about. When is enough enough?
Take care of the parks we already have, instead of creating spaces the homeless will surely take over.
