I am astounded at the superficial thinking and lack of strong leadership demonstrated by both our legislators and our City Council members. We have many complex problems, which require in-depth thought, analysis and leadership that is willing to take action to benefit our community.
I continue to see short-term “fixes” that do nothing to help core problems, but avoids opposition from an influential lobby. One example is the high cost of housing, which is worsened by concessions made to developers, short-term vacation rentals, lack of will to increase the minimum wage and inadequate enforcement of existing laws. There are many other examples.
While we are a culture that values harmony, respect and collegiality, that does not absolve our leadership from taking strong positions on issues that benefit our community.
Yes, that requires courage — which seems to be in short supply.
