Portuguese man-of-war warning signs posted at Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches

Portuguese Man-Of-War signs were posted today at Ala Moana Beach. The signs did not deter beachgoers from entering the water. Naulei Tuitele, 11, Lia Mannering, 11, and Kona Mannering, 12, show off a Portuguese Man-Of-War they caught.

Honolulu Ocean Safety officials reported Portuguese man-of-war sightings due to strong onshore winds.
The Portuguese man-of-war, commonly found in tropical and subtropical climates, is recognizable by its blue, violet or pink “balloon-like float.” Portuguese man-of-war’s tentacles reach an average length of 30 feet, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website.
