Recent events regarding illegal gillnets and the outrageous amounts of undersized fish caught that go way beyond bag limits make my blood boil. The perpetrators were nabbed not by the diligent work of fish and game enforcers, but by a stroke of luck. Staffers just happened to be driving by and observed these scumbags reaping all of our resources. Is this how our state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Harbors patrols work? By chance?
Apparently so, because recent reports reveal that some DLNR officers are using illegal GPS disablers in their trucks that allow them to sleep on the job without being detected by their superiors, while collecting overtime. This makes my blood boil even more.
No wonder so many illegal netting scofflaws are out there. The sorry condition of our shoreline fisheries is the result of the lack of accountability in the departments that are supposed to protect our natural resources.
