My father used to say, “The trouble with common sense is that it isn’t very common.” Here are three issues crying out for it:
>> Yes, electric cars should pay their fair share of road maintenance, but don’t scrap the gas tax and switch completely over. Just calculate road usage for e-cars when they register each year and send the tax amount along with the registration fee.
>> The Electoral College still serves a purpose; otherwise we’d elect our national representatives from the United Cities of America. But don’t make it winner-take-all. Do as Nebraska and Maine have done and allot the votes proportional to the election results.
>> It is ridiculous that we don’t have some sort of tax revenue from gambling. I’m not calling for casinos but at least a lottery dedicated to, say, the rail project, would help keep that money home and doing some public good.
